10 Days / 9 Nights – Tour II
Day 1: NEGOMBO – SIGIRIYA
At the airport you will be greeted by your driver who will take you to the hub of the cultural triangle, the town of Habarana. On the way you will have the opportunity to taste the famous King Coconut, visit a fruit plantation and finally the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, which houses the abandoned and the wounded elephants. Here you can watch them been fed and bathed. After lunch, continue to the town of Sigiriya, within Sri Lanka’s rich cultural triangle.
On the way to Sigiriya we will drive through Kurunegala. It was an ancient royal capital for 50 years, from the end of the 13th century to the start of the 14th century. Kurunegala is surrounded by coconut plantations and rubber estates. There are eight very noticeable large rocks that encircle and dominate the city. Kurunegala’s rocks rise from the plain below and have characteristic names, six of which come from the animals that they are imagined to represent. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Sigiriya.
Day 2: SIGIRIYA – ANURADHAPURA – SIGIRIYA
Today we will visit Sri Lanka’s biggest ancient city, Anuradhapura. Today a World Heritage site, it was the national capital for over 1300 years up to the 10th Century AD. You will visit an archeological museum, the sacred Bo tree, Brazen Place, Royal Palace, Samadhi Buddha and more. Dinner and overnight in hotel in Sigiriya.
Day 3: SIGIRIYA – POLONARUWA – SIGIRIYA
Today we go to one of the better kept ruins of ancient Ceylon – the UNESCO World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa, which was the medieval capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th – 13th century A.D. In the afternoon you will go to Minneriya National Park where we will do a jeep safari. This is usually a good place to spot wild elephants. After that we proceed back to your hotel in Sigiriya.
Day 4: SIGIRIYA – KANDY
After breakfast we visit the rock fortress of Sigiriya – a 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky”, a UNESCO world heritage. Adorning a palace on top of this large rock it is a must see in Sri Lanka. After that we proceed to Kandy. On the way, we will make a stop at one of the more unusual temples buried in a maze – the UNESCO Golden Cave Temple in Dambulla. Further you will see a batic factory and colourful Hindu temple in Matale. Optional and free of charge we can also go to a spice garden. Shortly afterwards you will arrive in spiritual Kandy, surrounded by greenery and the great Mahaweli River. Kandy is also well known as the centre of Buddhism. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Kandy. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Day 5: KANDY
We will visit a batik factory, a gem museum and Peradeniya Botanical garden. In the afternoon we visit the Temple of The Tooth and the traditional cultural Kandy dancing show in the evening. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Kandy.
Day 6: KANDY – NUWARA ELIYA
Welcome to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka’s tea growing centre. During the drive relish the endless views of tea carpeted valleys and the bright flash of female “tea pluckers” in their pimento, fuchsia and cerise saris. En-route to Nuwara Eliya visit the famous Ramboda waterfall, a tea plantation and a working tea factory. Enjoy a guided stroll of Nuwara Eliya town, pass the 18-hole golf course, the colonial member’s only Hill Club and English styled country homes. Dinner and overnight in hotel in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7: NUWARA ELIYA – ADAM’S PEAK – NUWARA ELIYA
Start climbing Adam’s peak early in the morning. See the sunrise and on the way back you can enjoy the magnificent views, see two nice waterfalls (St. Clair and Devon) and walk through tea plantations. Dinner and overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 8: NUWARA ELIYA – ELLA
Visit Nuwara Eliya city, the so called little England. During our city tour you will see colonial hotels, race courses, golf links, the post office building. After we visited Hakgala botanical gardens we will drive to Ella. Dinner and overnight in hotel in Ella.
Day 9: ELLA – YALA – TISSAMAHARAMA
Today you will set foot in the Yala National Park, famous for the elusive leopard and has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. The sloth bear and Asian elephant that are also part of Sri Lanka’s Big Five can be spotted. With some good luck you will witness all these creatures when you are doing the Jeep Safari at Yala national park. Overnight at Tissamaharama (extra: or have a night camping near the jungle).
Day 10: TISSAMAHARAMA – NEGOMBO OR WEST COAST BEACH
After breakfast back to Negombo or beach drop (any of Hambantota, Tangalle, Mirissa, Ahangama, Unawatuna, Galle Fort, Hikkaduwa or Bentota). If you have time, we could also visit places such as Dondra lighthouse, blow hole in Dickwella, Weligama fishing village or turtle breeding farm on the way back. End of tour.
